Call to action: Read I, II, III John

A psalm for anxiety

The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. One thing I ask from the Lord , this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock. Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the Lord . Hear my voice when I call, Lord ; be merciful to me and answer me. My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, Lord , I will seek. Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, God my Savior. Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me. Teach me your way, Lord ; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations. I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord ; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord .

Psalm 27:1‭-‬14 NIV

Gods word is good. I feel as so many things are crumbling around me, but God is working on changing my heart, drawing me to Him, and is going to continue to do great things.

These nuggets of God are like a balm…

To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue.

All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord .

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.

The Lord works out everything to its proper end— even the wicked for a day of disaster.

The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.

Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the Lord evil is avoided.

When the Lord takes pleasure in anyone’s way, he causes their enemies to make peace with them.

Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice.

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord .

The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction.

The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction.

Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.

A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.

Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.

The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord .
Proverbs 16:1‭-‬9‭, ‬16‭, ‬18‭-‬18‭, ‬20‭-‬21‭, ‬23‭-‬25‭, ‬28‭, ‬32‭-‬33 NIV

Beyond reproach

I want my words (as well as my thoughts) to be beyond reproach. Even to those that don’t like me… it is funny, not funny Haha, maybe more ironic, that as I was writing, “don’t like me”, the word was really, “hate” me. I don’t think I have ever thought about how there are people that hate me. However, I know now, that there are. Being the people pleaser I can be, that stresses me just a bit. That makes me desire to take this scripture from Titus to heart.

1You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. 2Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.

3Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

6Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. 7In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

Finish the race

My heart has found comfort in a few things, since hearing of our teachers passing. Linda was kind, quiet, a lover of music. She often kept to herself, but always had a smile for others.

Linda has finished the race…

Another balm for my soul is a song playing on my way home…

I used Shazam to discover Sheltered In The Arms Of God by Hillary Scott & The Scott Family.

I will hear the call of heavens portal, it’s the last mile you must trod…. Linda’s final mile, from my perspective, was difficult. I pray that God blesses her family.

We are called to bless those that curse us. No doubt there are many that curse me. Being the people pleaser I am, I never thought I would be in the place in which I would have to make decisions that would make others hate me.

I know that I need to do the things I need to do… but they are hard. I also know if it wasn’t hard, I wouldn’t be the right person. Father, I pray that you would go before me. Fill me with your wisdom and discernment. Bless those that curse me. Yet at the same time, fill me with your peace.

Did this devotional before, but wanted examples, so came back to it…

Suffering produces perseverance.
Romans 5:3 NIV

First of all, I am the worst when it comes to suffering. Muscle soreness after a workout will have me whining because of my ridiculously low pain threshold. But that is exactly it. Any athlete will tell you that in order to become faster, better, and stronger, you need to embrace the pain. The soreness indicates that your muscles are rebuilding themselves, which is good!

Faith is like a muscle, and the principle is basically the same here. Life comes with plenty of challenges along the way. The soreness that these challenges cause in your life have the potential to strengthen your faith muscle.

Whatever you are going through right now, whatever storms are raging in your life, I want to encourage you that your faith can grow in this season. Hold on to God, allow Him to build up your faith through the tribulation, and be patient in the process.
When we go through tough seasons in life, often times there is not much we can do but to be patient and trust Him.

What faith muscle exercises are you going through right now?

Sometimes, I don’t know why I am going through a trial. Today, I think it is a bit of combination, mainly hormones…. some pondering of work issues, and satan. I am just out of sort.

Forgive me father. Help me to be kind to my husband…

Self righteousness

The author of today’s reading shares this, There is so much irony in self-righteousness because it is exactly the self-righteous who don’t think they have a problem. That’s why it can be a toxic sin, one that creeps into our lives without our awareness. Today, I find it most apparent in my marriage. When I’m having a bad day, God forbid my husband sneeze too loudly, miss a button on his shirt, or accidentally leave the stove on. I’m quick to point out or dwell on his minor flaws while ignoring the far bigger issue: my critical spirit.” (Claire Gibson) #shereadstruth #hospitality

I am also guilty of this. Forgive me father.
